Scratchboard art is created by scratching the black ink surface that is overtop of a clay backed by a hard board. Various tools are used to make marks on the surface such as knifes, scalpels, tattoo needles etc. They all give different effects and artists have their preferences and use them to achieve a variance of textures to represent their image.
